Spain Rail Pass: Renfe's train pass for Spain

The Spain Rail Pass is a pass from Renfe that bundles 4, 6, 8 or 10 train journeys in Spain, to be used within 1 month. It is only for travellers who do not live in Spain.

Let's be upfront: Kombo does not sell the Spain Rail Pass. You buy it on renfe.com, from travel agencies or at Renfe ticket offices. What Kombo does sell are single tickets from Renfe, iryo and Ouigo Spain, compared side by side.

So why this page? Because the pass is not always the smart buy. Depending on how many trips you take and what single tickets cost, you can pay less without it. Below are the numbers to decide, and our guide to trains in Spain fills in the rest of the network.

Spain Rail Pass prices, rules and trains covered

Spain Rail Pass prices (indicative)

These fares come from the Renfe brochure and may change.

  • Standard class (adult): 4 journeys €220, 6 journeys €310, 8 journeys €390, 10 journeys €455.

  • Comfort class (adult): 4 journeys €290, 6 journeys €415, 8 journeys €525, 10 journeys €610.

  • Children aged 4 to 13: reduced fare. Under 4: free.

Prémium class is not available with the pass.

The real price per journey

Divide the pass price by the number of journeys:

  • Standard: €55 (4 journeys), €51.67 (6), €48.75 (8), €45.50 (10).

  • Comfort: €72.50 (4), €69.17 (6), €65.63 (8), €61 (10).

The rules worth knowing

  • The pass is personal: show your passport or residence card.

  • You have up to 6 months after purchase to take your first trip, then the pass is valid for 1 month.

  • Trains covered: long-distance and high-speed (including AVE), plus Media Distancia and Avant trains.

  • Every journey needs a seat reservation: online in "Mis abonos", at ticket offices, through agencies or by phone.

  • Free cancellation within 24 hours of purchase, then a 15% charge if the pass is unused.

Popular train routes: Madrid → Barcelona, Madrid → Seville, Madrid → Valencia, Madrid → Malaga, Barcelona → Seville.

Destinations to explore: Malaga, Cordoba, Alicante, Zaragoza.

Pass or single tickets: the maths that decides

Here is the rule of thumb: the 4-journey Standard pass works out at €55 per trip. If you can find single tickets for less, the pass costs you money.

When the pass makes sense

  • You take 8 or 10 trips in 1 month: each one drops below €50.

  • You book last minute, when single tickets tend to be pricier.

  • You want Comfort class on long hauls.

When single tickets win

  • You only take 2 or 3 trips: a 4-journey pass means paying for a trip you never use.

  • You book early: competition between Renfe, iryo and Ouigo on the main routes pushes prices down.

  • You want to ride iryo or Ouigo, which are separate companies from Renfe, while the pass is a Renfe product.

A sample trip: Madrid → Barcelona (about 2h30 for 621 km), Barcelona → Valencia, Valencia → Madrid (about 1h50), so 3 journeys. The 4-journey pass costs €220. With single tickets, you come out ahead as long as the total stays under €220, an average of €73 per trip.

A bit of trivia for rail fans: Spain's first high-speed line, Madrid → Seville, opened in 1992 for Expo 92, and the country now has Europe's largest high-speed network, around 4,000 km.
