What is the difference between Le Frecce?

The Frecce trains (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca) share a higher level of service and comfort than Intercity, Eurocity and regional trains and are different in terms of connections and speeds reached.

Travelling at full speed with the Frecciarossa

The Frecciarossa (AV) are Trenitalia's high-speed trains. They connect the main cities of the Italian peninsula, including Rome, Milan, Bologna, Naples, Florence and even Paris in reduced time thanks to their high speed (up to 400 km/h).

Frecciarossa offers 4 classes of service (Executive, Business, Premium, Standard), Wi-Fi, LED lighting and power sockets, air conditioning, bar-restaurant service and dedicated seats for disabled passengers.

Reach cities of art by Frecciargento

The Frecciargento (AV) connects major urban centres such as Rome, Venice, Verona, Trieste, Genoa, Naples, Salerno, Trento and Bolzano. They reach a maximum speed of 250 km/h connecting large and medium-sized urban centres.

The trains are equipped with reclining seats in both first and second class, bar-bistros, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, courtesy lights and power sockets, as well as dedicated seats for disabled passengers.

Travel in serenity with Frecciabianca

Frecciabianca (Long-Haul) trains connect cities such as Milan, Ravenna, Pescara, Bari, Lecce and Reggio Calabria. They travel at 200km/h on traditional lines, allowing you to reach large and medium-sized city centres.

On board the Frecciabianca you will find spacious seats, air conditioning, courtesy lights and electric sockets, as well as dedicated seats for passengers with disabilities.

Spend the night and rest on an Intercity

Trenitalia also offers day and night Intercity (IC) trains for long and medium distances. The Intercity Notte (more commonly known as the night train) travels long distances and offers cabins equipped with every comfort.

It is an intermediate category that generally connects two large stations in different cities, stopping at some smaller stations.

Travel to Europe with Eurocity

These are international day trains and connect cities that are part of different European nations. The Eurocity (EC) is a comfortable and fast way to travel across the Alps and visit some of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland (Geneva, Brig, Basel, Bern, Montreux and Lausanne), Germany (Munich, Frankfurt and Freiburg) and Austria (Villach, Salzburg, Vienna).

Enjoy the scenery on board a Regionale

These are national daytime trains that usually make all or almost all stops on the line they travel on. Identified by the abbreviation 'R' (Regional) or 'RV' (Regionale Veloce), these trains provide an essential service for travellers wishing to travel between cities, towns and villages within a given region or between neighbouring regions.

  • Allowance for delays of more than 59 minutes for Frecce, Intercity and Intercity Notte trains: In the event of a delay in arrival of more than 59 minutes, Trenitalia grants you an allowance equal to

In this case, you can choose to receive the compensation:

  • with a bonus for purchasing a new ticket within 12 months;

  • in cash for payments made in cash

  • by re-credit for payments made by credit card.

For regional trains only

In the event of a delay between the place of departure and the place of destination, it is possible to claim compensation amounting to

  • 25% of the ticket price in case of a delay between 60 and 119 minutes (for tickets of at least €16.00);

  • 50% of the ticket price in case of a delay of 120 minutes or more (for tickets worth at least €8.00).
