BahnCard: the Deutsche Bahn discount card

The BahnCard is the discount card of Deutsche Bahn: you pay a fixed price once for 12 months, then get 25%, 50% or even 100% off your journeys. The discount applies to DB trains within Germany, from the ICE to regional trains.

For a visitor from the UK, France or anywhere else, the real question is not which card sounds best, but how many tickets you need before it pays for itself. Paris ↔ Frankfurt takes 3h43 direct and Paris ↔ Munich about 6h, but the BahnCard matters most once you are in Germany: Frankfurt → Berlin, Munich → Hamburg, Cologne → Frankfurt. We do the maths for you below, euro by euro.

Your BahnCard also works on Kombo: when you book Deutsche Bahn train tickets, you can add your BahnCard and the discount is applied. Kombo compares more than 400 companies across train, bus, flight and carpooling, including DB, FlixTrain and FlixBus. One search shows you whether DB with a BahnCard beats the low-cost option.

Very practical for ordering trips on several means of transport at the same time, quick and efficient comparison and easy to use!

BahnCard 25, 50 and 100: prices and break-even

All 3 cards are valid for 12 months. The prices below come from the bahn.de price comparison.

BahnCard prices

  • BahnCard 25: €62.90 in 2nd class, €125 in 1st class. 25% off Flexpreis, Sparpreis and Super Sparpreis fares.

  • BahnCard 50: €244 in 2nd class, €492 in 1st class. 50% off Flexpreis, 25% off Sparpreis.

  • BahnCard 100: €4,899 in 2nd class, €7,999 in 1st class. Unlimited DB travel for a year.

The 3 DB fares in brief

Super Sparpreis ties you to one train, with no changes. Sparpreis also ties you to one train, can be changed for €10 until the day before, and starts at €21.99. Flexpreis is valid on any train that day, with free cancellation until the day before.

When does the BahnCard pay off?

The rule of thumb: divide the card price by the discount rate. The result is the ticket value you need to exceed in 12 months.

  • BahnCard 25, 2nd class: €62.90 / 25% = €251.60 of tickets.

  • BahnCard 25, 1st class: €125 / 25% = €500.

  • BahnCard 50, 2nd class, Flexpreis only: €244 / 50% = €488.

  • BahnCard 50, 2nd class, Sparpreis only: €244 / 25% = €976.

An example: you make 8 one-way trips a year between Frankfurt and Munich at €70 each on Sparpreis. That is €560 of tickets. The BahnCard 25 saves you €140, minus the €62.90 card: €77.10 in your pocket. The BahnCard 50 also gives only 25% on Sparpreis, so €140 too, but it costs €244: a loss.

So the BahnCard 50 suits people who mostly travel on Flexpreis. The BahnCard 100 works out at about €408 a month: it only makes sense for heavy commuters.

Popular train routes: Berlin → Munich, Berlin → Hamburg, Frankfurt → Berlin, Paris → Frankfurt.

Destinations to explore: Stuttgart.

Probe BahnCard, under-27s and seniors: options for occasional travellers

Going to Germany for one trip rather than a whole year? The other BahnCard versions change the maths completely.

Probe BahnCard: a 3-month trial

  • Probe BahnCard 25: €19.90, pays off from €79.60 of tickets.

  • Probe BahnCard 50: €76.90, pays off from €153.80 of Flexpreis tickets.

  • Probe BahnCard 100: €1,459 in 2nd class for 3 months.

A handy trick for a holiday with several train rides: 4 Sparpreis tickets at the €21.99 minimum price (€87.96 in total) are already enough to cover the Probe BahnCard 25.

Under 27, over 65, teenagers

  • My BahnCard (under 27): €39.90 for the 25 version, €79.90 for the 50 version.

  • Senioren BahnCard (65+): €40.90 for the 25 version, €122 for the 50 version.

  • Jugend BahnCard 25 (ages 6 to 18): €7.90, paid off after just €31.60 of tickets.

If you know the French Carte Avantage, the logic is the same: a fixed price, then a discount on every trip.

What about the Deutschlandticket?

It is a different product. The Deutschlandticket is a monthly subscription for regional transport (RE, RB, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, bus) at €63 a month, rising to €66.80 from January 2027. It does not cover ICE, IC, EC or FlixTrain, and it is not sold on Kombo.

Using your BahnCard: booking, digital card and cancellation

Adding your BahnCard on Kombo

Search your route on Kombo, for example Berlin → Munich (under 4h on the ICE Sprinter). When you book a Deutsche Bahn ticket, add your BahnCard and the discount is applied to the price. Coming from France? Compare Paris ↔ Frankfurt by TGV or direct ICE. Kombo can combine tickets from different companies, exchanges and cancellations take 2 clicks on eligible tickets, and customer service is available 7 days a week.

Digital only

Since 2024 the BahnCard has been digital only. It appears in the DB Navigator app. Alternatively, print a PDF with a QR code and show it with your ID.

Watch out for auto-renewal

The BahnCard 25 and BahnCard 50 renew automatically for another year. If you do not want that, cancel at least 4 weeks before the end date. The BahnCard 100 simply ends.

Where the BahnCard does not work

The discount applies to DB trains within Germany. It is not valid on FlixTrain. For Switzerland or Austria, look at SBB and ÖBB. Planning a bigger trip? See our guides to train travel in Germany, train travel in Italy and the Spain Rail Pass.

Frequently asked questions about the BahnCard

When does the BahnCard 25 pay off?

The 2nd-class BahnCard 25 pays off once you spend €251.60 on tickets in 12 months, because €62.90 divided by 25% equals that amount.

Is the BahnCard worth it for a single trip to Germany?

The annual card rarely is, but the Probe BahnCard 25 often is: at €19.90, it pays off after €79.60 of DB tickets within Germany over 3 months.

Is the BahnCard 50 better than the BahnCard 25?

Only if you travel mostly on Flexpreis: the BahnCard 50 gives 50% off Flexpreis but only 25% off Sparpreis, the same as the BahnCard 25. If you book Sparpreis tickets, the BahnCard 25 at €62.90 beats the BahnCard 50 at €244.

Can I use my BahnCard on Kombo?

Yes, you can add your BahnCard when booking Deutsche Bahn tickets on Kombo. The discount is then included in the price.

Does the BahnCard work on FlixTrain or on Paris ↔ Frankfurt?

Not on FlixTrain, and the discount applies to DB trains within Germany. To find the best price for the whole journey, compare cheap train tickets from every company on Kombo.

How do I cancel a BahnCard?

Cancel at least 4 weeks before it expires, otherwise the BahnCard 25 or 50 renews for 12 months. The BahnCard 100 ends automatically.
