The ÖBB and all its trains in Austria

The ÖBB presents different types of trains to meet the needs of each passenger. Each type of train allows you to make journeys through Austria and its regions. Here are the different ÖBB trains:

  • Railjets: the most comfortable and high-speed trains

  • The Eurocity : trains throughout Europe

  • InterCity: trains between Austrian cities

  • Nightjets: night trains

  • Cityjets: commuter trains

The three most used ÖBB trains to travel in Austria in the best conditions are Railjet, Eurocity and Nightjet. But you can also use DB trains to get to Germany, or even SNCF to get to France at low prices.

ÖBB Railjet or Eurocity?

ÖBB Eurocity and Railjet are two ideal choices for your solo, business or family trips. In order to know what choice to make between these two types of trains, Kombo explains their specificities and their advantages in order to choose the best one.

Eurocity:

The Eurocity with ÖBB is the assurance of a journey in full comfort in order to reach Austria with all its border countries. The Eurocity ÖBB is mainly intended for travelers but also for tourists looking for trips in Europe just like the Eurostar.

In the Eurocity ÖBB you will find multiple services to make your ÖBB journey one of the most pleasant. On Eurocity ÖBB trains, you can eat in the dining car often placed in the middle of the train. Cars are separated between private compartments and trains with seats open to everyone, just like in SNCF trains. In order to respect everyone's comfort, the ÖBB recommends compartments for families and open seats for business categories or travelers in small groups.

During your ÖBB journey with a Eurocity, you will also find two other compartments: one for women who wish to breastfeed discreetly and another compartment for young children who wish to exercise on board the ÖBB train. This female compartment is rare in European trains.

Two categories of tickets are available on Eurocity ÖBB:

  • First class: This business class offers more legroom and a slightly stronger Wi-Fi connection than in other cars. This category of tickets is ideal for professionals who wish to work on board the ÖBB train in peace.

  • Second class: ÖBB second class is also comfortable and more suitable for family travelers and tourists. ÖBB trains are very comfortable and offer internet connection to all passengers.

Just like in SNCF trains, two classes are available for your greatest comfort.

Railjet:

The Railjet is a modern ÖBB train that offers you high-speed journeys in Austria but also takes you to Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic or Slovakia.

These trains were built in addition to the Eurocity in order to transport even more passengers thanks to the ÖBB in Austria and Europe. These trains are ideal for families, business trips and tourists. ÖBB Railjets make travel fun for everyone. On board you will find a free Wi-Fi connection, games and fun areas for young and old alike, a restaurant and quiet areas for resting or working as well as family areas.

On board your Railjet ÖBB train, you will find three classes, just like in the Eurostar:

  • Business class: The ÖBB Business class is the ultimate comfort for your travels with the possibility of adjusting the inclination of your seat but also of your legs. The business seats are in quiet compartments for 4, 3 or 1 people. In this formula, drinks and meals are brought directly to your seat.

  • First class: The leather seats offer you much more legroom and total comfort for your long ÖBB journeys. In this type of ticket, drinks can be delivered directly to your seat. Each seat is also equipped with an electrical outlet.

  • Economy Class: ÖBB Economy seats bring you the comfort of a seat with space for your legs but also for your suitcases. The large windows will give you a view of the beautiful Austrian landscapes. Snacks and catering are not included in this type of ticket, but you have access to the ÖBB dining car.

On this type of train, the ÖBB gives you the possibility of having a service that takes care of your luggage from your arrival at the station until your arrival at your destination, the Deutsche Bahn also offers this service at an additional cost. Ideal when you don't want to worry about your personal belongings or are traveling in a large group.
