Regional train tickets

Trenitalia regional train tickets

When you board a regional train, remember to have a valid and validated ticket.

If, during the journey, you find yourself without the correct travel documents or show expired tickets, you will be required to pay the full price plus a fine of €200, unless different regional provisions. Payment made within 15 days of notification will reduce the amount to €100. On the contrary, immediate payment to the train's on-board staff will bring the fine to €50. This rule is also applicable if you have a regional ticket online but do not have a valid identity document to present.

If your ticket is not valid for that particular train or service (for example, you have selected the wrong category or you are traveling on a different route), you will have to cover the difference at full price and pay a surcharge of €8.

Remember that, except in specific regional cases, you can ask the conductor as soon as you get on the train to purchase or validate the ticket without incurring any surcharge. This is possible in the following scenarios:

  • When you leave from stations without ticket service or with non-functioning vending machines.

  • If you have a Concession III (for blind people) and are traveling on regional trains.

  • If you have a ticket to validate and there are no functioning ticket validators available in the station.

  • In case you are unable to find a seat in second class and wish to travel in the upper class.

Regional ticket validity

The regional ticket has its own validity and those in paper format are valid until 11:59pm on the day indicated on the ticket itself. The actual time validity begins when the ticket is validated.

Starting from September 21, 2024, online tickets will no longer require validation through online check-in before departure. The check-in will now be automatically completed by the Trenitalia system at the departure time indicated on the ticket.

Until 11:59 PM on the day before the travel date, you can make an unlimited number of changes to the date and time. On the day of travel, you can also make unlimited time changes until the ticket is automatically activated at the departure time.

For further details you can check our guide.

Regional train timetable

renitalia's regional trains have very frequent departures, especially on short distance routes, so as to guarantee considerable flexibility in your travels. The time gap between one ride and another can vary from one hour to 15 minutes. For detailed information on regional train timetables, we recommend checking all departure times on Kombo by typing the city of departure and arrival and selecting the date of your trip. Click search and you're done!

Regarding night trains, it should be kept in mind that Trenitalia manages them slightly differently. Fast regional trains are usually active between 05:00 in the morning and around 21:00, after this time they leave room for Intercity trains for night runs, equipped with couchettes and carriages ideal for resting.

With a regional train, you can reach numerous tourist destinations throughout the Peninsula. For example:

Milan - Verona: departing from 6:25 in the morning until 23:25 in the evening.

Naples - Rome: with departures from 4:00 am until 21:46..

Milan - Venice: with departures from 6:25 am until 20:45.

Matera Link: The Trenitalia Regionale together with its partner Miccolis will accompany you with the train + bus service which allows you, with a single ticket, to reach Bari Centrale station with the Regionale and from there continue by bus towards the city of Matera.

Pompei Link: Located at the entrance to the Park – Via Villa dei Misteri, the practical bus connection takes you from Pompeii station to the park and vice versa in about 15 minutes.
